Antitussive APIs

Antitussive APIs are a class of compounds that achieve antitussive purposes by inhibiting the cough center in the oblongata or acting on peripheral sensory organs, afferent nerves, efferent nerves, and respiratory smooth muscles in the peripheral cough reflex arc, thereby preventing the cough reflex. Commonly used antitussive APIs can be divided into central antitussives and peripheral antitussives. APIs that can inhibit the cough center in the brain are called central antitussives, such as codeine, oxymethol, etc., while APIs that can inhibit other links of the reflex arc (the afferent side, the efferent side) are called peripheral antitussives, such as cough suppressants and noscapine.
