What are effervescent tablets?

Effervescent tablets are a popular dosage form that combines the benefits of tablets with the effervescent properties of carbonated beverages. It is designed to release carbon dioxide (CO2) in contact with water, which promotes its disintegration.

Within minutes, the effervescent tablet dissolves completely and the drug becomes a solution. The production of CO2 is the result of a chemical reaction between a carbonate or bicarbonate (e.g., sodium bicarbonate) and a weak organic acid (e.g., citric acid or tartaric acid) in the presence of water.

1. Preparation of raw materials

Prepare raw materials required for effervescent tablets, including active pharmaceutical ingredients, excipients, and effervescent agents. We ensure that the quality of the raw materials meets the requirements and carry out the necessary inspections and tests.

2. Powder mixing

The active ingredients and excipients are powder-mixed by using a stirrer or mixer to ensure that they are evenly dispersed.

3. Wet granulation

The blended powder is wet granulated with an appropriate amount of wetting agent to form a granular mixture for the subsequent formulation process. The wetting agent can be water or other solvents.

4. Granulation drying

The pellets after wet granulation are dried to remove moisture and enhance the stability of the pellets.

5. Mixing and tableting

The dried granules are mixed with other excipients such as dispersants, sweeteners, acidulants, etc. to further improve taste and drug stability. The mixture is then pressed into tablets, which is usually accomplished using a rotary tablet press or a tablet press.

6. Coating and packaging

If desired, the effervescent tablets can be coated to enhance their stability and appearance. Finally, the effervescent tablets are packaged, and common forms of packaging include effervescent bottles and aluminum foil packaging.
