The Concept of Coated Microneedless

Coated microneedles are an emerging multifunctional delivery system that can be used to deliver a wide range of materials, including small molecules, proteins, DNA, viruses, and even particles.

Coated microneedles contain sharp, solid microneedle structures coated with a solid membrane containing an active compound and a water-soluble inactive excipient. When a drug-coated microneedle is inserted into the skin, the coating encounters interstitial fluid present in the tissue, contact with which helps to dissolve the water-soluble excipients in the coating, which in turn triggers the separation of the coating from the microneedle surface. Coated microneedles can be used to deliver their coating payload not only to the skin but also to other tissues.
